William
Stoddart 'Willie' Stoddart sadly passed away on 14th March 2008 at the age of 88. He was a well known and successful businessman in the town, owning The Rum Puncheon, The Punchette and Redfearns Garage, in Golden Square, Berwick, and a member of BDMC since the late 1940's. Following his return from World War II, where he spent several years as a prisoner of war working on a farm in Poland, his brother presented him with an MG sports car. This seems to have encouraged Willie to become involved in motorsport including competing regularly in the 1950's on The Monte Carlo Rally, and The Tulip Rally on which he proudly set a fastest time on one stage. He was apparently also particularly proud of a photo of himself taken outside The King's Arms Hotel alongside the Grand Prix stars of the time, Jim Clark, Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart as they attended a BDMC Annual Awards in the sixties. (Imagine Lewis Hamilton, David Coulthard and Anthony Davidson attending a BDMC Dinner Dance now!) He remained an active Club member long after he stopped competing, was made an Honoury Member in the 1980's and continued to take an interest in how the Club was doing. His contribution to the Club was significant and it is thanks to Willie and his contempories that Berwick & District Motor Club continues to thrive to this day. Berwick & District Motor Club would like to extend its condolences to Willie's wife, Doris, to his son, John, daughters Anne and Joan, and grandchildren Sarah, Ewan, Cameron and Alice. Donations may be sent to: The Parkinsons Disease
Society
Welcome to Berwick & District Motor Club. We are based in the Eastern Scottish Borders and North Northumberland where BDMC has an extensive programme of events throughout the year, with the Jim Clark Memorial Rally (co-promoted with our friends at Border Ecosse Car Club) as the premier event in the calendar. The only ‘Closed Roads’ rally on mainland Britain, the JCMR has been a round of the British Rally Championship since1999. In recent years BDMC has built a reputation for promoting
quality events that have proven popular with both competitors and spectators
alike. In 2004 The Johnston Trophy was reborn, this time as an introduction to all the basic elements that crews would encounter in a proper historic road rally: special tests, timing, navigation and regularities. This event has now built up a reputation of it's own with a range of exciting Tests and very simple navigation. The Buglass Trophy is now a navigational rally but originated
from the ‘good old days’ of selective road rallies and is
a round of the TMSG Navigational Series. However, it is not just rallying that we have on offer. There is the, now annual, Autocross at East Ord in September and usually three or four Autotests throughout the year. Last, but by no means least, there is the end of season shindig, the Annual Awards and Dinner Dance held in early December. If you would like details on becoming a member of Berwick
& District Motor Club you can download the Club Membership Form from
